A Hilo patrol officer shot in the line of duty took the witness stand for a second day on Monday in the attempted murder trial of 32-year-old Keaka Martin, a Hilo resident accused of shooting two Hawaii County Police Department officers last year.
A Hilo patrol officer shot in the line of duty took the witness stand for a second day on Monday in the attempted murder trial of 32-year-old Keaka Martin, a Hilo resident accused of shooting two Hawaii County Police Department officers last year.
Officer Joshua Gouveia told a jury that after realizing he had been shot he initially thought he was going to die. At the request of the prosecutor, Gouveia also demonstrated for the jury the position he was in when he was shot.
He also testified that the injuries he suffered to his upper left hip and thigh required him to spend three days in the hospital and how those injuries continue to affect him.
Martin is accused of shooting Gouveia and Officer Garrett Hatada on the night of Jan. 2, 2013. The shooting took place in the parking lot of the Pono Place on Kilauea Avenue in Hilo, the site of the former Green Onion cocktail lounge.
Gouveia, Hatada and other officers responded to reports of gunshots in the vicinity at about 8 p.m. and to the Pono Place parking lot about a half-hour later after dispatchers received reports of a suspicious man hiding under a vehicle.
