A winter weather advisory is in effect for Big Island summits through 6 a.m. Wednesday.
Forecasters said up to two inches of snow could fall on Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea above 12,500 feet in elevation. The service cautioned of snow accumulations and freezing fog.
The service forecast east winds of 10 mph to 20 mph with gusts topping 30 mph. Temperatures are expected to be in the near 30 degrees.
The Mauna Kea Access Road was closed as of 7:33 p.m. Tuesday at the Visitor Information Station because of snow, ice and limited visibility. The temperature was 29.7 degrees at the summit.
A winter weather advisory means that periods of snow, sleet or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties, according to the service, which cautioned drivers to be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibility.
