The Hawaii members of the Pacific Media Workers Guild said Tuesday it applauded the decision by The Maui News to halt its plan to shift to postal delivery of the newspaper.

“The reactions by readers of our paper, full of passion and energy, show that The Maui News remains a critical institution in our community,” a press release by the guild said Tuesday. “The appreciation and praise for the work done by our Guild members leave us humbled and grateful. We thank everyone who made clear that so many Maui County residents want a local paper on their doorstep every morning.

The plan to change delivery methods proved to be one the company felt, in the end, to be inappropriate, it said. The idea was put forward by the company in an effort to minimize cuts elsewhere, including to staff.
