5 star coffee awards worth the taste
As an event of the 19th annual Holualoa Village Coffee and Art Stroll, three well-known chefs from Kona tasted coffee from more than 30 coffee farmers on Saturday.
Chefs Justin Peters of Holuakoa Gardens, Morgan Starr of Mi’s Waterfront Bistro and Randy Martin of Rebel Kitchen walked the length of Holualoa, tasting 100 percent Kona coffee at booths set up by each farmer offering their coffee to worldwide visitors.
“The Coffee and Art Stroll is the wonderful opportunity I have once each year to stroll with other chefs on a beautiful morning and enjoy Kona’s very best coffees,” Starr said. “Every one of the participating farms provides us with a sip of incomparable taste, but each year the flavor of the coffee from for or five farms — and not the same farms each year — shines through. Congratulations to this year’s winners!”

Lions Club gifts $10K to Habitat Hawaii Island
KAILUA-KONA – The Lions Club of Kona presented a $10,000 check from the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation to Habitat for Humanity Hawaii Island at the site of the 2017 Blitz Build. The funds were used to help cover the cost of the project.
The Lions Club recently completed 100 service hours by volunteering at a seat belt/booster seat clinic hosted by the West Hawaii Public Health Nurses. This allowed them to nominate a non-profit organization to the Weinberg Friends to receive a $10,000 grant.
Out of about half a dozen applications the club received, Habitat Hawaii Island’s Blitz Build was chosen as the best project to support.
“From all the applicants for the grant, Habitat for Humanity made the strongest case for how the money was being put to use. Providing new homes for 10 families in need is such a great cause,” said Jack Vore, Lions Club member, in a press release. “We are proud to be a part of that.”
This is the fifth consecutive year the Lions Club of Kona has been able to bring this grant into the local community, each year benefiting a different organization with the 100 hours of work, and a different organization with the $10,000 grant.
The grant funds were used to cover the cost of the energy-efficient sliding glass doors, helping to keep the newly built Habitat homes green.
Habitat for Humanity Hawaii Island completed 10 homes in 10 days in September, and is currently working on two homes in Waikoloa. To find out how to donate and get involved with Habitat, please visit www.habitathawaiiisland.org.
