KAILUA-KONA — Highway 190 was reopened last night after a brush fire north of Puuanahulu closed it.
Road closures were at Makalei in Kailua-Kona and the entrance to Daniel K. Inouye Highway in South Kohala.
The Department of Land and Natural Resource’s Division of Forestry and Wildlife is handling the situation as the fire occurred on state land.
According to an aerial survey Sunday morning, Hawaii County Fire Department battalion chief Ian Smith said the fire burned an estimated 900 to 930 acres.
Uhh… someone correct the headline? Where is Highway 109?
Highway 109 – where dat?
Is this the South Kohala arsonist again ? This person or these persons have to be caught . The entire driving Big Island public need to become a vast Neighborhood Watch . Write down plate numbers . See someone parked and acting suspicious ? Stop nearby , keep them under surveillance, call the cops and take photos . We have to engage this stuff people . Not ignore and just keep on going .
Why is it so hard to find information about the status of this fire? Containment (is it still at 35%?), map of the fire area, wind and humidity conditions? Whether the fire dept has an estimate on when the fire will be fully contained? Could one of your reporters look into this story more and provide more thorough information? The smoke at night has been awful, and it must be terrifying for people in Waikoloa Village, etc.
