HONOLULU — The Hawaii Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation approved a bill to boost the registration fees in Hawaii for electric and hybrid vehicles.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports the bill would impose an extra annual registration fee of $70 for electric vehicles and $35 for hybrids to try to equalize the tax burden between conventional vehicles and the more fuel-efficient hybrids and electric cars.
Owners of electric vehicles currently pay weight taxes and a registration fee of $45 per vehicle per year, but do not pay the gasoline tax.
Senate Transportation Committee Chairwoman Lorraine Inouye says since the gas tax is one of the primary sources of funding for maintaining the state network of roadways, “we need to have them pay their fair share.”
Inouye says there are about 7,000 electric vehicles and 25,000 hybrids on Hawaii highways.
Incentives to own one of these expensive vehicles!
Those high priced so called vehicles are nothing but polished turds.
By penalizing the owners of these type of vehicles do you not take the incentive out of trying to get away from fossil fuels and clean up the environment. That’s the reason roof top solar has slow way down, all the good incentives are gone. I do not own this type vehicle nor would I ever, but our state government just can’t pass up another fee. (tax)
Ya wanna make it even for all then just abolish the gas tax.
Amen Brother! Unfortunately KRich my odd sense of humor got lost. First these vehicles were all the toast of the land with incentives and then when people do what the government wants by falling into line it blows up in their face. You see the government is too stupid to realize that when one creates efficiency thru incentives you are going to loose revenues. And the best case scenario is to beat it out of the little man so they can keep their jobs in lieu of downsizing their footprint! As you I would never own one of these POS’s but to each his own. I think this is just another example of our government forcing crap down our throat by saying we will make it cheap and then yanking the rug out from under us.
I do get it Buds, Just wish I didn’t
Lorraine has been in power way too long and our roads keep on deteriorating and our taxes (fees) keep going up, this cow needs to be put out to pasture.
I hope we understand that these things mostly run on fuel oil.. If you truly want a green car, it needs a sail or peddles and made of wood.
