Konawaena scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat Aiea in the opening round of the HHSAA state softball tournament on Tuesday at McKinley High School.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second but Na Alii fought back with a run in the third and two in the sixth for a 3-2 advantage, setting up the dramatic five-run seventh.
Konawaena was bolstered by the middle of the lineup, with Jayla Medeiros, Kaimana Joy Manzano and Erin Kaimuola-Bates each picking up multiple hits on the evening. Medeiros went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs, Manzano was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, and Kaimuola-Bates picked up two hits in four at-bats, with three RBIs and a run.
Shaylann Marie Grace picked up the victory inside the circle. She threw all seven innings, spreading around 10 hits.
Jaenah Padasdao, Mikelle Gonzales and Kehaunani Arke picked up two hits each for Aiea. Arke took the loss, allowing seven runs, two earned, off nine hits. She walked three and struck out three in seven innings of work.
The Wildcats will play No. 1 seeded Kapaa today in the quarterfinals. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at McKinley.
Honokaa 11, Kaimuki 8
In a back-and-forth battle, the Dragons outlasted Kaimuki to advance to the quarterfinals of the HHSAA DII quarterfinals on Tuesday.
Honokaa jumped out to a 6-1 advantage in the bottom of the first inning but the Bulldogs reeled them in with a five run top of the third to tie the game.
Honokaa took the lead once again in the bottom of the frame only to see it slip away with a Kaimuki two-run fourth.
The Dragons tied the game in the fifth and a three run sixth inning sealed the victory.
Tehani Epenesa led Honokaa’s offense with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Destynee Carvalho, Natasha Molina and Taylor Tabucbuc had two hits apiece.
Carvalho knocked in two and scored once. Tabucbuc had a run and an RBI, while Molina scored once.
Tehani Epenesa picked up the victory in the circle. She threw all seven innings, spreading out 11 hits and six earned runs. Epenesa struck out seven and walked two.
Leilani Mauricio received the loss for Kaimuki. She threw six innings, allowing five runs, three earned, off four hits. She walked one and struck out three.
Sonia Palik led the Bulldogs with three hits.
Honokaa will be back in action today when they take on No. 2 seeded Kamehameha-Hawaii. The game is slated for 2:15 p.m. at McKinley.
St. Francis 10, Kohala 0
The Saints powered their way past Kohala to advance to the quarterfinals in the HHSAA DII tournament. Saint Francis had five home runs, two triples and two doubles in the five-inning mercy rule victory.
Both Kaena Keliinoi and Sammie Ofoia had two home runs each. Ofoia finished the day 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs. Keliinoi was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs.
Kailee Mahelona went 2-for-2 with a home run, a double, two runs and three RBIs.
Sierrah Kupihea picked up the victory in the circle, going 3 1/3 innings, striking out six and walking one. She allowed no hits. Kailee Mahelona threw 1 2/3 innings, giving up two hits and walking five.
Kalia Tabiolo-Amaral and Mikayla Kekoa picked up the lone hits for the Cowgirls. Mikayla Kekoa took the loss, allowing nine earned off 11 hits. In five innings of work, she struck out three and walked two.
Division I
Pearl City 19, Kealakehe 4
The Chargers scored 10 runs in the fifth inning to end Kealakehe’s hopes of a state title in the opening round of the HHSAA DI tournament on Tuesday.
The Waveriders scored all their runs in the first two innings, but Pearl City pushed four across the plate in the top of the second and five in the fourth before the double-digit outburst to end the game early.
Kealakehe struggled defensively, committing eight errors.
Noel Saunders and Braelynn Kaulu-Choy Foo led the Chargers’ offense. Saunders, batting leadoff, went 3-for-4 with a double, four RBIs and three runs. Kaulu-Choy Foo followed Saunders in the lineup, going 3-for-5 with a home run, four RBIs and two runs.
Jamiana Tan, Lisan Mudong and Kenye Palik picked up the only three hits for Kealakehe.
Alexas Presto-Ahsing picked up the victory in the circle for the Chargers. She struck out four and walked two in four innings of work.
Telsea Taketa took the loss for the Waveriders. She threw all five innings, allowing seven runs off 11 hits. She walked seven and struck out one.
Girls golf
Iolani senior Kamie Hamada was the only one to shoot a par 72 in the first round of the state golf tournament Tuesday at Turtle Bay Resort.
Defending state champion and Punahou senior Claire Choi is a shot behind at 1-over 73, along with three others.
The highest BIIF placer is Waiakea freshman Kailey Oki at 78, and one stroke behind is her senior teammate, Kaley Saludares at 79.
Other BIIF golfers were Hilo’s Chanelle Hwang, 81; Waiakea’s Lacey Uchida, 81; Waiakea’s Kaelyn Uchida, 81; Waiakea’s Mari Ebersole, 83; Waiakea’s Tia Kualii, 84; Waiakea’s Jillian Mitsuda, 84; and Christian Liberty’s Jaeda Yamasaki, 92.
Iolani held the team lead with a 224 total, defending state champion Punahou was second at 229, and Waiakea seventh at 242.
