Civil societies don’t
arm and intimidate
I believe in Second Amendment rights to own a gun (I have a BB gun) for self protection. I am not in favor of people carrying exposed, deadly weapons in public on their person. Nor would I want to see people carrying a tomahawk, big bolo knives, machetes, etc. exposed in public.
Carrying exposed, dangerous weapons in public creates a mindset for violence, anger, intimidation and the likes of negative behavior. We are not in a war zone and we do live in a civil society.
I saw a man with a bat strapped to his belt in an elevator in Waikiki, and I felt intimidated. Civil society, especially in the land of aloha, is filled with kindness, goodness, respect, and peace for one another is to be encouraged.
We vote for elected officials who encourage civil obedience and respect the laws of the land for all people through positive actions, service for the underprivileged, encourage education and talents to help our society as a whole.
We live in a tourist-based economy where people come to Hawaii for peace, relaxation, enjoy the aloha spirit of the people here and our diversified culture. We are multicultural and have lived in peace with all races and culture. Let us not destroy the sense of harmony, beauty of the islands and people.
Let’s have judges who encourage sense of reason rather than take up the stands for the law literally.

Labels pale
compared to truth
I can see myself being labeled as a political extremist as I read letters sent to this newspaper. Fortunately, labels are just a silly way to ignore the truth and shoot the messanger.
I found the ugly remarks aimed at Jancie Glennie by Dave Hurst in your letters column recently in keeping with what Trump wants to call “fake news.”
Ms. Glennie has dared to speak the truth. If the truth doesn’t suit your alternative universe, try wearing a Trump T-shirt and call everyone who disagrees with you stupid.
I wouldn’t mind being called “poisonously divisive” if by speaking the truth I can correct the injustices we face each day.
And Janice, I am respectful of your knowledge and passion for the truth.

Air prayer for
outdoor sports
Our God is all-powerful and the air on Earth symbolizes God’s omnipresence and nothing else. God’s omnipresence includes purity, vitality, infinite good, joy, glory, health and happiness. God is so amazing and has no awareness of a little, insignificant volcano.
We love and honor God. We do not fear a tiny volcano that has no power. Thank you, God, for your love and protection.
The church of Christian Science members used the air prayer because the athletic director at our high school was talking about canceling outdoor sports due to poor air quality.
