HILO — The state Department of Health will hold a series of public hearings next month on the Big Island to discuss proposed changes to the state’s immunization requirements for school attendance.
Ronald Balajadia, immunization branch chief for the Department of Health, said the hearings will allow the department to hear testimony from members of the public about the proposed changes.
“The rationale for the changes is just to bring our rules in line with current medical practices,” Balajadia said last week.
Hawaii’s current immunization requirements were established in 2001, Balajadia said, and several newer vaccines have been developed since then.
For the most part, the proposed changes — which would go into effect in 2020 — retain the current immunization requirements, but add a handful of new vaccines to the required list.
In addition to the current requirements demanding six immunizations for children up to age 2, the new vaccines required for that age group would include vaccines against Hepatitis A, streptococcus, rotavirus and influenza.
The K-12 age group would be required to have the Hepatitis A vaccine as well, but also the human papillomavirus vaccine, the meningococcal vaccine, and a vaccine inoculating against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis, commonly known as “whooping cough.”
The latter three vaccines also would replace the ones currently required for seventh-grade students, while post-secondary education students will be required to have the meningococcal and tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis vaccines, in addition to a chickenpox vaccine and two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine.
Balajadia said that the DOH will retain medical exemptions for children with compromised immune systems and for religious objections.
The proposed changes have provoked criticism by a minority of parents who oppose vaccinations for a variety of reasons.
The DOH encourages parents concerned about the possible side effects of vaccines to discuss them with their general practitioner or pediatrician, Balajadia said.
However, the changes will not affect how the Department of Education handles unvaccinated students. The DOE currently allows provisional entry to students without proper immunization records or exemptions, but will require students to complete their immunizations within three months or risk being removed from school.
Representatives of the DOE did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
After the December hearings, Balajadia said the DOH will need 30-60 days to sort through the testimony before reaching a decision.
The public hearings will take place from 9-11 a.m. Dec. 20 at the Hilo State Office Building in conference rooms A, B and C, and later that day from 2:30-4:30 p.m. at the West Hawaii Civic Center Meeting Hall, Building G.
Written testimony can be submitted to the DOH by email to immunization@doh.hawaii.gov. The deadline is 4 p.m., Dec. 26.

The whole concept for mass vaccinations is the ‘herd’ approach… so can someone please explain why the HPV vaccine is in this list of vaccinations required to go to school?
Tetanus is there, too, and that’s not communicable, whereas HPV is through sexual contact. The optimal time to receive the HPV vaccine is prior to first sexual contact and that’s in the pre-teen time.
HPV is widespread in the US population and can result in nasty cancers in men and women.
Narrowly, you could argue that it’s not our schools’ responsibility to require either, but broadly speaking, our society is better off with a vaccine-prevention approach than a medical-treatment approach after infection.
The DoH is not authorized to order the poisoning of your school children. Those vaccines and flu shots are the reason that we are such an outrageously increasing sick and autistic bunch of human beings.
Research human pappiloma virus and immunization deaths and flu shot deaths and how many claims are filed against pharmaceutical companies who pay FDA testing and trials. The CDC has a victim fund and they would rather pay victims instead of prevent the further poisoning of our population.

1. I never said cancer is a communicable disease. HPV is, and that’s the virus that causes all kinds of cancers, and it most certainly is communicable: it’s a human to human sexually transmitted virus. Please re-read my post.
2. You claim vaccines have killed and maimed millions. If true, this would have to be the best X-files hidden conspiracy in the world, requiring the complicity of millions of doctors, researchers, epidemiologists, public health officials, media and more. It’s just not true. Do you have any peer-reviewed research in any modern major medical journals to back up your claim?

4. If vaccines are so bad, why has Smallpox been eradicated worldwide? Vaccines. Polio has gone from 400,000 infections 40 years ago to less than 20. Why? Vaccines! Measles, Mumps, Rubella way down. Vaccines! Work around cattle or step on a rusty nail and not develop Tetanus? Thank your vaccines! HPV infection rates in young women are down by over 50% since the HPV vaccine use became widespread (check the CDC website), while it has not decreased in older, non-vaccinated women. Thank vaccines!

6. Are you Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) or a Medical Doctor (MD)? If you are an MD, do you have a licensed clinical practice? Just wondering….
If I were a doctor of medicine, I would believe all the same crap you believe. And yes I’ve seen the graphs showing declines in illnesses with all the scary names designed to fear people into compliance but what you’ve conveniently failed to mention is that upon the advent of electricity, plumbing and refridgeration, sanitation got a whole lot better and so did people’s health. The numbers of people with all kinds of illnesses dropped like a rock. And since you are as fooled as anyone can be and haven’t figured out that you’ve been just as tricked as the next guy, there’s no such thing as ‘polio’, ‘mumps’, ‘measles’, ‘rubella’, ‘flu’, etc. There are only symptoms that are real. For instance, the word ‘polio’ means the color grey in Greek but if the medical interests labelled these various symptoms ‘grey’ it wouldn’t scare anybody but the word ‘polio’ absolutely does. I can believe you or millions of doctors, health care professionals, virologists, infectious disease researchers and others all across the globe (now and in the past) who have studied and published in peer-reviewed journals (with blind review processes) that have come to conclusions far different from yours. As such, I won’t repeat the fantastic life-saving benefits vaccines have brought civilization. 1) find a boogeyman (pharmaceutical companies, and I guess the last hundred years of medical research),
2) claim all medical knowledge about an area is false (“they” just haven’t figured it out yet),
3) claim you have special knowledge, unbeknownst to the mainstream medical and research fields.
4) create a binary system–“they” are completely wrong, you are 100% correct
5) claim heretofore everyone has been brainwashed, except you, as you have found the “truth”

You’re either a genius headed toward a Nobel Prize in medicine, as your “discoveries” would completely change medicine as we know it, or a person who sincerely believes what he’s saying (I don’t doubt your sincerity), but is spreading ideas (vaccines are ineffective) that are not scientifically sound or proven.
Why do I care? I know three polio survivors who have suffered greatly in their lives, and take great offence to anyone putting people’s lives at risk by spreading demonstrably false and misleading information. I also know a local kid who was not able to enter school because of his mom’s anti-vaccine stance. I know I’m not going to change your mind, which is fine and understandable, but people reading this deserve to see a strong rebuke of such nonsense.
I sent a lengthy response to your post but apparently it was rejected. I will just say this. If a person is brainwashed, they don’t know it. Otherwise, if they knew they were brainwashed, they wouldn’t be brainwashed right? I was medically brainwashed for 39 years. The reason I know that is because I found health information that’s far superior to medical school information. What’s taught in medicine schools is controlled by the pharmaceutical industry and is designed to bring in the most money as it’s always profits over people. Unfortunately that’s what you’ve been taught too and still believe. Don’t take this personally. I mean it simply as an objective fact. I got lucky. I found the best health information that’s possible because it’s based on what we, human beings, are in nature. I’m 30 years older than when I tripped across this information and can honestly say that I have not taken even as much as one single aspirin since 1989 while most people my age are on at least one or multiple medications. The people I have counseled have had remarkable improvements as well as long as they maintain their healthier habits of living as health is only produced by healthful living, certainly not drugs.
Over all health at least in western cultures improved with the advent of electricity, refrigeration and modern plumbing and not injecting poisons into human infants, children and adults. The so called Spanish Flu epidemic of 1918 was caused by the so called vaccines. That’s why people were dropping like flys. I’ve read books about how deadly vaccines are that were written decades ago all the way up to the present. Type in ‘gardicil damage’ on youtube and listen to the young women who can no longer even get out of bed, girls that were once vibrant active achievers in high school academics and sports. Get educated before making wild claims. Facts outstrip opinions. The
autistic scares of the late nineties resulted in much tighter
restrictions/testings. The danger of not immunizing affects the mass
populace tremendously, particularly in warm/humid environments and
populations of multi-ethnicities. HPV is an enormous problem and affects mass-populace. The Big Island had pervasive cattle-ranching island wide, Tetanus is an Island-wide threat.

The US Pharmaceutical industry needs guinea pigs. It would be safer no to use US made vaccines, those are likely rubbish and contaminated, in order to make a quick buck.

Probably since the medical profession is the largest advertiser for rags like this one. The main thing for you to know is that the dis eases the vaccine makers claim their poisonzines protect humans from are NOT contagious. They are due to mal nutrition – diet and other lifestyle factors. The reason infants and adolescents seem to be more vulnerable is because their digestive systems are under developed and when they are fed foods that we are not biologically designed to eat, they putrify in the intestinal tract and since this happens daily, the body’s normal organs of elimination can’t keep up with the toxic load so the autonomic nervous system excretes this waste via the skin so you don’t die and that’s your so called “mumps”, “measles”, “chicken pox”, “small pox”, “flu”, psoriasis, lupus, pimples, acne, etc.
