Girl Scouts recall lemon creme cookies
By Local Sources
Thursday, March 11, 2010 6:51 AM HST
Girl Scouts of Hawaii is voluntarily withdrawing its Lemon Chalet Creme cookies after receiving complaints from Hawaii residents the delectable treat's creme filling was discolored.

The sandwich cookies filling appears gray near the edges, said Communication Director Tammy Yamanoha adding she sampled several of the cookies in question and found the discoloration does not affect the taste or smell of the cookie.

Girl Scouts is voluntarily recalling all the lemon cream cookies delivered or sold to residents in the state to "err on the side of caution," she said. Troops were notified to stop distribution of the cookies soon after the five complaints were received.

"It's unfortunate but this can serve as a lesson for the girls on real life, leadership and entrepreneurship," Yamanoha said.

Yamanoha said she had no issues after eating a few of the cookies, but was unable to confirm if the cookies are safe for consumption. Some of the cookies were sent to the mainland for testing and the organization hopes to receive the results early next week.

"In the previous withdrawal, the cookies were safe to eat, I can't comment on the safety now because we don't know what the test result is," she said. Hawaii's withdrawal is not related to a February recall of thousands of boxes of the lemon cookies distributed on the mainland.

Yamanoha was unable to provide how many of the suspect cookies arrived in the 350,000-box shipment that arrived in Hawaii last week.

Customers who purchased Lemon Chalet Creme cookies are asked to contact Little Brownie Bakers at littlebrowniebakers.com or call (800) 962-1718 for reimbursement. Local Girl Scout troops should not be contacted for reimbursement, Yamanoha noted.
