This double screening will show two locally-made films, Reefs at Risk and Aloha From Lavaland. Following the films, there will be a Q&A with the filmmakers. Admission is $5 at the door. ABOUT THE FILMS: Reefs at Risk (11 minutes). Set on the beautiful beaches of Hawaii, “Reefs at Risk” explores the harmful effects some sunscreen chemicals have on coral reefs, marine life and people. In order to protect this fragile ecosystem, Hawaii strives to ban a commonly used UV chemical, called oxybenzone, and hopes that other states and nations will follow. Visit www.ReefsAtRisk.org to download a reef safe sun guide. Aloha From Lavaland (55 minutes). Shot during the 2014 lava flow that encroached upon Pahoa's main access road, this three-time award-winning documentary explores what it means to live in such an unpredictable paradise, and what the incident can teach the rest of the world about community, sustainability, harmony, and aloha.
