‘Hell Bent’ on Hawaii Island: Johnny Nicholas and band to tour with Honokaa Dragon Jazz
HONOKAA — Blues master Johnny Nicholas and his all-star band — Hell Bent — from Austin, Texas will perform three shows on Hawaii Island this weekend, along with young musicians from Honokaa High School’s Dragon Jazz Band.
Big Island debaters shine at Neighbor Island Tournament
WAIMEA — Parker School hosted the Speech and Debate Qualifying Neighbor Island Tournament (NIT) Jan. 12 and 13. Twelve of the top teams in the state attended, and for the first time three Big Island schools participated: Hilo High, Hawaii Preparatory Academy (HPA) and Parker School.

Waimea Elementary students and staff will hold a craft fair for the second year from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Feb. 3 as part of the town’s annual Cherry Blossom. HPA middle and upper school dean’s list announced
Sixteen sixth graders, 21 seventh graders and 24 eighth graders at Hawaii Preparatory Academy’s middle school made the dean’s list for the first semester that ended Dec. 7.
Kanu o ka Aina students present ‘Ka Lei Maile Aliʻi’
WAIMEA — Hawaiian language students from Kanu o Ka Aina have taken on the kuleana to present “Ka Lei Maile Alii,” the historic play translated to mean, “The Queen’s Women” at 6 p.m. Jan. 17 at Kahilu Town Hall.

Children and their families are invited to Admission Open Houses from 10 a.m.-noon Jan. 20 and Feb. 3 at Waimea Country School. Attendees can see the campus and hear directly from faculty, students and parents about the school’s fully accredited learning program and ohana atmosphere.
HPA cheer team spreads holiday aloha in San Diego: Perform at 40th Holiday Bowl
WAIMEA — Last Thursday, nine Hawaii Preparatory Academy (HPA) cheerleaders joined 14 other cheer teams from around the nation to perform in the 40th annual Holiday Bowl halftime show in front of 65,000 fans in San Diego.
Children give and receive at Waikoloa Elementary holiday event
At Waikoloa School’s Parent Night Wednesday, kindergartners and first-graders entertained the family audience with holiday songs. Friends of the Library — Waikoloa Region provided books for each of the students performing. For some of them, this is the first book they have of their own at home.
The students that keep on giving
More than 25 Kohala Middle School students in the AVID after-school program completed their second community service project last week for The Big Island Giving Tree (BIGT). Led by teacher Jenny Stevens, the seventh and eighth graders filled 46 food bags and delivered them to kupuna at the Ainakea Kohala Elderly and Kohala Senior Residences complexes Thursday. They finished their first BIGT project the week prior.
Winter Camp offered at Parker School Jan. 1-5
During winter break, children ages 5-12 can attend the school’s “Off to Hogwarts” camp. They will arrive at Platform 9 ¾ and board the Hogwarts Express, go to the train museum, visit the Main Hall to learn about the night sky and visit Ollivander’s Wand Shop.
Kohala Middle School students prepare gifts for the houseless
With joyful hearts and excitement, seventh and eighth-grade Kohala Middle schoolers prepared gift bags for the houseless last Tuesday to assist The Big Island Giving Tree as their community service project. Bags included donated soap, razors and shaving cream, flushable wipes, toothpaste and toothbrushes, shampoo and conditioner, body lotion and sunscreen.

Culture Conscious Cinema engages diversity through entertainment
WAIMEA — Earlier this fall, Parker School launched the Culture Conscious Cinema series on campus. It features monthly films as an approach to understand race, ethnicity, class and gender; how these things intersect with one another in the culture and history of the United States; and how the entertainment industry represents these ideas to the public over time.
WMS robotics teams earn invitation to state’s First Lego League Championship
WAIMEA — For the third consecutive year, Waimea Middle School (WMS) robotics students will compete in the upcoming First LEGO League’s (FLL) State Championships Dec. 2 at Blaisdell Exhibit Hall in Honolulu.
Keana Kaohimaunu graduates from Culver-Stockton College
Criminal justice major Keana Kaohimaunu from Honokaa was one of a number of December graduates honored during a reception Nov. 11 at Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Missouri. The short program honoring six MBA and 39 undergraduates included remarks from Culver-Stockton College’s President Kelly M. Thompson, Dean Dan Silber and several faculty and staff members.

Bringing home the trophies: Parker School Debate Team wins statewide sweepstakes tournament
WAIMEA — Parker School’s 37 debaters won 79 ballots Nov. 11 at the Punahou School Non-Qualifying Speech and Debate Tournament on Oahu, winning the trophy for the largest overall number of wins. Punahou School placed second with 51 ballots.
