Tropical Storm Adrian forms off El Salvador

KAILUA-KONA — The first tropical storm of the season formed Tuesday off Mexico, a week before the official start of hurricane season in the Eastern Pacific.

Tropical Storm Adrian was located about 360 miles south-southwest of El Salvador and was packing 40 mph winds. The storm’s expected to move toward the west-northwest for the next couple of days. As of Tuesday evening, the storm was steaming along at 7 mph.

Gradual strengthening is forecast during the coming days. Current forecast models have the tropical storm reaching hurricane strength on Thursday.

Hawaii is located in the Central Pacific, nearly 4,400 miles west of the depression. The Central Pacific hurricane season officially begins June 1.
