Tutu’s House will host free programs this week.
Ancient Yoga meets from 11 a.m. to noon on Wednesdays, Dec. 2, 9, 23 and 30 with Deanna Olivier. Bring water, a yoga mat and towel; wear loose clothing.
Officer D. Smith-Erickson, Community Police officer, will present “Home and Vehicle Security” from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. The security methods and tips shared in this presentation are designed to educate the community about protecting the home from burglary and the vehicle from theft.
“Getting Comfortable with Facebook” from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Dec. 7. Kyle Combes will teach about: controlling privacy settings, proritizing posts from important people, the ins and outs of posting, and other miscellaneous tips and tricks to help make a person comfortable on Facebook. Bring a computer.
Tutu’s House, located in Waimea, is a project of Friends of the Future. There are no fees for its programs, but donations are welcome.

Suicide intervention skills class offered
An Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training class will be provided to the public from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday at West Hawaii Civic Center. Anyone interested in learning skills that will help keep safe a person at risk of suicide is welcome to attend. Attendance is required on both days.
Participants must be at least 15 years old.

Press club plans Christmas luncheon
The Big Island Press Club will hold its annual Christmas luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Dec. 10 at Hilo Bay Cafe.
Members will be serving up tributes to the helpful folks from the U.S. Geological Survey Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, winner of the 2015 Torch of Light award, and a light-hearted look at “Hughisms,” in honor of the late Hugh Clark, one of the club’s founding members.

Words and Wine scheduled Tuesday
Authors Kahikahealani Wight, Mary Lou Sanelli and George Douvis will be featured during Kona Stories Book Shop’s Words and Wine event at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Keauhou Shopping Center.
Wight grew up in a time when Honolulu society did not value Hawaiian language, culture, or landscape. Then, in the 1980s, she bought a cottage near the erupting summit of Kilauea and lived there for five years. “Rainforest Puuhonua” is her memoir of those years of awakening. She is also the author of “Learn Hawaiian at Home” and “Illustrated Hawaiian Dictionary.”
Sanelli has published seven collections of poetry and three works of nonfiction, “Among Friends,” “Falling Awake,” and her newest title, “A Woman Writing.” Sanelli relies on her literary voice and candid sense of humor to explore the realities true to anyone who has thought of making writing a part of his or her life.
Douvis is a holistic health educator, home school teacher, social media activist and a radio presenter. “Crossing Karma Zones” is the author’s personal account of growing up in a racist community, his involvement in the civil rights movement and antiwar protests, psychedelic experiences and the legendary Woodstock Festival.

Shriners team coming to Waikoloa
Shriners Hospitals for Children-Honolulu’s pediatric orthopaedic medical team will be seeing children from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, at the Hilton Waikoloa Village. The hotel has donated conference room space for the patient visits. Families can see world-class physicians and enjoy the beautiful grounds and valet service.
If a child has a bone, joint or muscle condition such as scoliosis, sports injuries, or any other orthopaedic issues, Shriners specialists can help. The attending physician will be chief of staff, Craig Ono, M.D., who was awarded 2015 Physician of the Year by the Healthcare Association of Hawaii. Shriners cares for children up to age 18 and accepts insurance or no insurance, regardless of family’s ability to pay.

Child and Family Service receives $2K grant
Child and Family Service has received a $2,000 grant from the Barbara S. and Allen C. Wilcox Jr. Foundation. The gift will help strengthen Kona families.
Established in 2011, the goundation continues the legacy of Barbara and Allen Wilcox Jr., who were longtime residents of Napoopoo and civic leaders in the Kona community.
