Kona surf murals auctioned for charity
O.N.O. Kona together with Ke Kula o Ehunuikaimalino completed two 8-foot by 10-foot mural panels for the 2017 Kona Surf Film Festival that are being auctioned to raise money for Kona organizations Aloha United Way and The Betty Kanuha Foundation.
Students teamed with local artists and cultural practitioners to complete the project. The stories of Kona’s most famous surf sports, as told by longtime Kona resident, Jerome Kanuha, inspired each panel’s concept.

Plant Christmas trees on Mauna Kea
The Hawaii Forest Industry Association will hold its Aina Mauna Christmas Tree Planting from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, March 3 on the slopes of Mauna Kea. Those interested in growing Christmas trees on other lands are encouraged to also attend this planting.
Volunteers will plant Douglas fir trees on Department of Hawaiian Home Lands in the Humuula/Piihonua area at 6,000 feet elevation. Aileen Yeh, Hawaii Agriculture Research Center Horticulturalist and Researcher, will lead the volunteer efforts. Attendees should bring a jacket or raincoat and wear closed-toe shoes and long pants.

KHS celebrates Shrove Tuesday with cinnamon bread bake
Kona Historical Society will make its famous Portuguese cinnamon bread to celebrate Shrove Tuesday. This special bake will happen from 10 a.m. to noon Feb. 28 at Kona Historical Society’s stone oven, or forno, in the pasture below its main office and its historic general store museum in Kealakekua.
Cinnamon bread loaves can be purchased for $8 starting at 12:30 p.m. Sales are on a first come, first served basis and go until 4 p.m. or until everything is sold out. Proceeds support the Kona Historical Society.
Kona Historical Society also bakes close to 100 loaves of white, wheat and sweet bread every Thursday.

UH-Hilo S-STEM Program accepting applications
The Scholarships for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (S-STEM) Program at the University of Hawaii at Hilo is accepting applications through March 15 for the 2017-18 academic year.
The S-STEM Program is sponsored by the National Science Foundation and provides support to students from economically disadvantaged families who are academically talented and motivated to complete degrees in astronomy, biology, chemistry, computer science, environmental science, geology, marine science, mathematics, natural science, or physics. Each scholar receives up to $5,000 per year or $20,000 for four years of undergraduate studies, providing the student maintains the required academic standing.
