    Palama Supermarket, locally owned and operated by the Lim family, celebrates its 40th anniversary this month and part of the festivities is the inaugural Hansung Kimchi Festival in Hawaii. Kimchi grandmaster Kim Soon-ja has been officially recognized by the South Korean government in 2007 and her line of kimchi will be available for taste and purchase at all three Palama Supermarket stores through Tuesday.

    Hawaii is unique in its horticultural blend of plants and landscapes. Although we live in the tropics, gardening is heavily influenced by the ways of Europe and the Americas. This plus Asian, Polynesian and African agricultural influences have made landscaping and gardening fun, but a bit complicated.

    When choosing plants for a garden, you may base your decision on a variety of factors. We sometimes decide to choose plants based on a color palette we like. This is easy to do if you want a garden of greenery. The choices abound. Many lovely tropical plants do not produce colorful flowers but have beautiful leaves in all shapes, sizes and shades of green. If you want brighter colors, you may choose among the numerous species that flower in red, orange and yellow. For dark contrast, you may select some of the purple flowering varieties.
