    The seven-member K-pop group BTS continues to get headliners around the world. Early this month at the Mnet Asian Music Awards, BTS was awarded artist of the year for the second year. BTS with their song, “DNA,” is the first Korean boy group to get on Billboards main “hot 100.” There is a new version of “Mic Drop” remixed by world class DJ Steve Aoki featuring rapper Desiigner. I actually was very surprised to hear the new version on a local radio station while I was driving the other day. Their recent performance to a standing audience at the American Music Awards catapulted their fame in the U.S.

    Recently, I received an email from an alert citizen whose remarks were published in Money magazine in March. It apparently impressed the editors of the magazine enough to print this comment in extra-large type. It was in response to an article titled “The 2017 Washington Wish List,” and here it is:

    Fifteen short days to Christmas and the days will actually be getting longer by the time we open presents. As the days lengthen, our garden plants begin to swell with the anticipation of spring. Even in Hawaii, where winters are mild, we feel the pulse of new life. Precipitation in East Hawaii has also helped pump life into resting shrubs and trees. The flowering season for Kona coffee will be in a month or so if we get a good winter storm next month.

    Douglas asks: I am growing lots of native plants from seed in my small home nursery but I am spending many hours weeding so that the seedlings can thrive without competition. A friend suggested that I try using a pre-emergent herbicide in the pots to control the weeds once the seedlings have sprouted. I want to be organic. Is there an organic weed suppressor I could use?
