Let’s begin with one left over from last week … Kyle and Kimo were about to eat with their babysitter when 6-year-old Kyle said, “You can’t sit in Daddy’s seat.” The baby sitter replied, “But your Daddy’s not home and I am responsible for you while he’s gone. So, I can sit here today because I’m the boss!” Kimo, the 4-year-old, quickly piped up, “If you’re the boss, you sit over there in Mommy’s chair!”

Dementia doesn’t discriminate. It doesn’t care whether or not you have the resources or familial support to manage the symptoms of this progressive cognitive illness, and it won’t go easy on you if you have a difficult time providing the care required to assist you through the challenging times. Whether you have nothing or everything to give financially, it will not make it less traumatic on the heart level.

Aloha my friends! So let’s start with some “shorties” with which we can all identify: Yes officer, I did see the speed limit sign … I just didn’t see you! Now, that’s a “dare you!” … I changed all my passwords to “incorrect” so whenever I forget, it will tell me, “your password is incorrect!” … If “con” is the opposite of “pro,” then Congress is the opposite of “progress!” … Sometimes just getting out of bed ruins the whole day! … One more? Arguing with a woman is like reading the software license agreement. In the end, you ignore everything and click “I agree!”

April has been an excellent month for those studying the outer solar system. The Outer Solar System Origins Survey and its counterpart, Colors of the Outer Solar System Origins Survey, announced the discovery of some interesting new additions to the icy objects past Neptune.

One of my neighbors has some really rascal children. While preparing to dye Easter eggs, his little boy put only red color in the pot. Well, of course all the dozens of eggs came out red! The very clever mother, now very used to such children’s misbehavior, replied, “Great, no Easter eggs, no Easter egg hunts. We’ll just save them and hang them on the Christmas tree!”

I was granted the license to open an adult day care center here in Waimea 15 years ago. I was in my late 20s and had worked very hard to get the education and experience needed to properly care for older adults. Through college and my early years in Hawaii I’d worked in long-term care facilities, adult day care centers, residential care homes as well as a home health aide, and felt it imperative to take the best of each of those programs and create a high quality home-like care environment.
