Former Kohala girls school receives Preservation Award

On May 19, Historic Hawaii Foundation recognized Kohala Institute with a 2017 Historic Preservation Honor Award for their renovation of the buildings. Presented annually since 1975, the awards are Hawaii’s highest recognition of projects, organizations or individuals active in preservation of the state’s archaeological, architectural and cultural sites.

    Jewelry artist Sid Nakamoto will demonstrate a simple and beautiful jewelry design for the next North Kohala Public Library adult and teen craft program at two workshops Aug 7. The first session will be at 2 p.m. and a second one at 6 p.m.

    From 2-6 p.m. this Monday through Friday, children ages preschool through high school can participate in the free day camp to include crafts, music, play, lessons and a family dinner each evening at St. James Episcopal Church in Waimea.

    At 7 p.m. this Wednesday, a free chamber music concert will be performed by Hawaii Performing Arts Festival faculty in a traditional atmosphere at Hawaii Preparatory Academy’s Davies Chapel on the Upper School campus.

    Hawaii Performing Arts Festival’s youngest rising stars will perform a free concert at 7 p.m. this Friday at Hawaii Preparatory Academy’s Davies Chapel. The evening of light opera and musical theater fare is free and open to all ages.

    The Kohala Hospital Charitable Foundation (KHCF) will host the event from 1-5 p.m. July 29 at Kahua Ranch. It will feature food, music and dancing, as well as a live auction. Entertainment will include performances by Lorenzo’s Army and Bad Papa.

    The Okinawan taiko drumming group will hold a fundraiser and show from 10 a.m.–3 p.m. July 29 at Mana Christian Ohana in Waimea, behind Kahilu Theatre. Crafts, baked goods, plants, food and a silent auction will be offered.
