Living World War II veterans to be honored
Nearly a dozen veterans stationed at Camp Tarawa during WWII will return to the Big Island with their families for several events later this month.
Now in their 90s, they will visit Waimea Oct. 19 for a stop at the Camp Tarawa Memorial in front of Parker Ranch, followed by a slide show presentation at Parker School’s Theatre. It will include historic photographs and information about their training, their time on island and their ultimate mission. The presentation is open to the public. No RSVP is needed.
A luncheon at Kahilu Town Hall will follow. RSVP is requested by calling Kathy Painton at 880-9880 by Oct. 15.
Thelma Parker Public and School and Library closure
Waimea’s public library will be closed Tuesday through Friday. It is scheduled to re-open Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
Repairs to the electrical circuitry at the adjacent Waimea Middle School will require a shutdown of the electrical system Thelma Parker Library shares. Due to the construction work, the Hawaii State Public Library System determined closure of the library was necessary for the health and safety of staff and patrons. The book drop at Thelma Parker Library will remain available throughout the closure.
‘Wahi Pana: Stories on Canvas’ on display
The 2017 Community Arts Exhibit is open through Oct. 30 at Isaacs Art Center. The free show features art pieces by students ages 13 and older who participated in a 12-week summer art session taught by Scot Plunket, featuring guest storyteller Ku’ulei Keakealani.
The exhibit is co-sponsored with Waimea Education Hui through the Richard Smart Fund of the Hawaii Community Foundation.

Mauna Kea Quilters monthly meeting
The group will gather from 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, and the second Saturday of most months, at Thelma Parker Memorial Library.
It begins with a brief business meeting, then show-and-tell, followed by sharing new ideas and techniques for patchwork quilting. Each year the group donates many quilts to help fundraise for worthwhile community organizations and donates quilts to the police/fire department and North Hawaii Community Hospital for those in need. At Christmastime they make and donate quilted stockings and coverlets for needy children.
