Kohala Middle School students prepare gifts for the houseless

With joyful hearts and excitement, seventh and eighth-grade Kohala Middle schoolers prepared gift bags for the houseless last Tuesday to assist The Big Island Giving Tree as their community service project. Bags included donated soap, razors and shaving cream, flushable wipes, toothpaste and toothbrushes, shampoo and conditioner, body lotion and sunscreen.

    WAIMEA — Offered exclusively to administrators, teachers and students — including those in home schooling programs — PBS Hawaii will host a free presentation from 4-6 p.m. Sept. 27 at Hawaii Preparatory Academy’s Gates Performing Arts Center. It will focus on their statewide digital learning initiative and student news program.

    Students, their families and community members can participate in Waimea Middle School’s fifth annual 1.5 or 3-mile run/walk event Sept. 29. Registration and a silent auction with gift baskets created by students and families will begin at 4 p.m. in the cafeteria, followed by the run and walk at 5 p.m. At 5:30 p.m., dinner will be served.

    The Kohala Center’s High School Sustainable Agriculture Program will host its next session from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Oct. 9–13 at their Demonstration Farm in Honokaa.

    This year, Waimea Middle School will join the Elementary School for the Literacy Night event from 5-7 p.m. Sept. 20 in the cafeteria. All grade levels will be involved.

    More than 200 Hawaii Preparatory Academy senior and junior students spent Wednesday morning learning from Blue Zones Project — North Hawaii volunteer Tina Stuart at a purpose workshop she led at Gates Performing Arts Center Auditorium. The talk was followed by breakout sessions in the dining room and library, where students determined their purposes in groups and decided how they can best use their talents to serve the school.

    WAIMEA — Now that the two-story, nine-classroom STEAM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Aina/Arts-Math) building is closer to completion at Waimea Middle School, an eighth-grade journalism class got a sneak peek last week and were quick to ask the obvious: “When do we move in?”

    The Malaai Garden class at Waimea Middle School (WMS) from 9 a.m.-noon will be on Sept. 9, not Sept. 10, as previously noted. The nutrition lesson will teach how to make food delicious and nutritious.

    WAIMEA — Last Wednesday, 90 students from Hawaii Preparatory Academy’s Junior Class of 2019 volunteered at Ulu La’au, the Waimea Nature Park. Four volunteers directed their activities, dividing the large group into four smaller groups so each could accomplish their own tasks.

    WAIMEA — West Hawaii Mediation Center, along with the Department of Education, is offering a free one-day Restorative Practices Foundations workshop open to the public from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. this Tuesday at Mana Christian Ohana in Waimea. It will provide an overview of restorative justice principles and theory, restorative practices in schools, implementation guidance and a review of resources.
