Bringing home the trophies: Parker School Debate Team wins statewide sweepstakes tournament

WAIMEA — Parker School’s 37 debaters won 79 ballots Nov. 11 at the Punahou School Non-Qualifying Speech and Debate Tournament on Oahu, winning the trophy for the largest overall number of wins. Punahou School placed second with 51 ballots.

    From 9 a.m.-1 p.m. this Saturday, the third annual event will be held at Kanu o ka Aina. Open to parents and students from Waimea Elementary, Paauilo Elementary and Intermediate, Honokaa Elementary, Intermediate and High Schools, Kohala Elementary and Kanu, workshops will cover robotics, rocket building, flying a drone, school gardens, navigation, energy, coding and origami.

    The show at 7 p.m. May 5 at People’s Theater will showcase music from the band’s upcoming CD and feature instrumental soloists and vocalists.

    WAIMEA — Parker School qualified five students for the National Speech and Debate Tournament during the three-day Hawaii Speech and Debate State Tournament April 6-8 at Kamehameha and Punahou Schools on Oahu.

    WAIMEA — Thomas Yoo, a senior at Hawaii Preparatory Academy, has been named a National Merit Scholarship winner in the 62nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

    A total of 1,241 students at the university earned an A (4.0) this semester. Another 4,481 earned a B-plus (3.5) or better to make the listing. To be on the honor roll, students must carry at least 12 graded hours of course work.

    WAIMEA — Eric Fetsch earned national recognition in the 2017 Scholastic Art &Writing Awards earlier this month, presented by the Alliance for Young Artists &Writers.

    Kohala Elementary School became Blue Zones Project Approved earlier this week. They are the first public school in North Hawaii to earn the distinction. Chiefess Kapiolani Elementary School in Hilo was named the first Blue Zones Project Approved school in the state last May.

    KAUAI — The Hawaii State High School Future Farmers of America Convention concluded April 1 at the Courtyard by Marriott at Coconut Beach in Kauai. Seven Honokaa High School students represented the Big Island at the four-day event, led by their agriculture teacher, Manuel Jadulang.
