Haroleen Makuakane

Haroleen Puena Makuakane, 64, of Hilo, died Aug. 22, 2017, in Hilo Medical Center. Born in Keaukaha, she was a homemaker and a former bus driver for Laupahoehoe Transportation Company and Hele-On.

Visitation will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Sept. 15 at Dodo Mortuary Chapel, Hilo. Funeral service is at 10 a.m. with burial to follow at Alae Cemetery. Casual attire.

She is survived by, son, Douglas Vallente, Jr. of Hilo; daughter, Jane Makuakane of Hilo; sisters, Adeline Makuakane of Hilo, Margie (Gerald) Abiley of Hilo, Millicent (Herbert) Riedel-Majamay of Hilo, Cindy Wilson of Hilo and Robyn (Greer) Riedel of Hilo; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Sarah Akiona

Sarah Ku’ulei Ha’aheo Ho’oulu i’ae O’Kawaiola Akiona, 21, of Waimea died Sept. 2, 2017. Born in California, she was a 2013 graduate of Honokaa High School, cashier at Waimea Coffee Company, server/cashier at Charley’s Thai Kitchen Waimea and recently self-employed.

Family and friends may call from 9-10 a.m. Sept. 16 at the Honokaa Hongwanji Hall, followed by a celebration of life and luncheon. The family requests casual attire and no flowers.

She is survived by daughter, Ava Estelle and companion, Kodi-Dean Springer both from Waimea; mother, Kelsie Ann DeRego of Honokaa; father, Paul Akiona, IV of Kona; sister, Ka’i Akiona of Honokaa and brother, Makana (Jessica) Akiona of Waimea; grandparents, Keith and Arma-Lee Kaniho of Waimea, and Paul and Mary Akiona, III of Maui; niece and nephew; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Louis “Red” and Tina DeRego of Honokaa.

Le Vaughn Carter

Le Vaughn Carter, 70, of Mountain View, died Sept. 7, 2017, at the Hilo Medical Center. Born in Denver, he was a retired machinist for the former Southern Pacific Railroad Company, elder and member of the Keaau Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses and an amateur radio operator.

Friends may call from 1–2 p.m. Sept. 16 at the Mountain View Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 17-4010 Ahuahu Place, Mountain View for a 2 p.m. memorial service. Casual attire.

He is survived by wife, Marlena Carter of Mountain View; daughters, Laurie (Warren, III) Royal of Sacramento, Calif., Natalie Carter of Montgomery, New York, Brittany Carter of Moreno Valley, Calif.; numerous brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Wendy Fountain

Wendy Lou Fountain, 55, of Keaau, died Sept. 1, 2017, at her home. Born on Aug. 20, 1962, in Massena, New York. She was an art teacher for Keaau High School and Seton Catholic High School, Plattsburgh, New York. She was also a U.S. Army veteran.

A memorial service with Eucharist will be held 11 a.m. Sept. 16 at the Church of The Holy Apostles, 1407 Kapiolani St., Hilo. Casual attire.

She is survived by husband, Rob Fountain, Jr.; children, Ian Fountain, Erin Busch and Elizabeth (Peter) Warneck; mother, Catherine Simms; brothers, Jerry Simms, Warren Simms, Joseph (Helen) Simms and Craig O’Gallagher; sisters, Kathy (Bill) Henry and Karen Schimdt; grandchildren, Peter Warneck and Parker Warneck; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Robert Visaya

Robert Dominador Visaya, 76, of Hilo, died at the Legacy Hilo Rehabilitation and Nursing Center Aug. 16, 2017. He was born in Kukuihaele, and was a retired tile setter with the former RV Ceramic Tile Contracting.

Friends may call at the Dodo Mortuary chapel from 4-5 p.m. Sept. 16 for a 5 p.m. memorial service. Casual attire and no flowers.

He is survived by his wife, Sally Visaya of Hilo; daughters, Gail (Monte) North of Glendale, Ariz., Roberta (Alan) Tada of Hilo, and Sally Renee Visaya of Hilo; hanai daughter, Jade Tsuge of Hilo; brothers, Stanley (Daisy) Visaya of Honolulu, and Edward Visaya of Tabor, Ind.; sister, Lisa Conn of Kamuela; stepbrothers, Alan (Paulette) Familiar of Hilo, and Rudy (Jean) Familiar of Kamuela; stepsister, Gabby (Miles) Kunishige of Kamuela; two sisters-in-law; five grandchildren; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Judy Sumera

Judy “Hemma” Emi Sumera, 73, of Hilo, died Aug. 31, 2017, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, she was a retired secretary from the University of Hawaii at Hilo.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. Sept. 20 at Dodo Mortuary chapel in Hilo for an 11 a.m. service. Burial follows at 2 p.m. at Homelani Memorial Park Ilima Section. Family requests casual attire be worn.

She is survived by son, Tim (Jodi) Sumera of Hilo; daughter, Jenn (Mike Cardines) Sumera of Hilo; five grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Paul Schaal

Paul Schaal, 74, of Waikoloa, died Sept. 1, 2017, at his residence. Born March 3, 1943, in Pennsylvania, he was a retired chiropractor, former major league third baseman for the Angels and Royals. He was also the owner of Schaal’s Pizza.

No services are planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to PAWS University at 73-4259 Hawaii Belt Road #A, Kailua-Kona, Hawaii 96740.

He is survived by wife, Monica Schaal of Waikoloa; daughter, Cheryl Hess of California; brother Bill Schaal of Arizona; sister-in-law; two grandsons, both of California.

Lee Tepley

Dr. Lee Raymond Tepley of Kailua-Kona, 89, died Aug. 28, 2017, at his home. Born in Denver, Lee graduated with his PhD in physics and retired from Lockheed Martin in California. Then as an underwater photographer, he lived with adventure and was famous for his pilot whale incident filmed in Keauhou.

Private services will be held.

Lee is survived by his wife, his son, brother and stepdaughters.
