I agree with Tom Russi and Eugene Schmitz that cyclists should ride as far to the right as possible. That’s what I was taught in the 1940s and 50s when riding to school and delivering my paper route. The roads and streets were designed for vehicular traffic not joggers or cyclists.
I realize we must accommodate them but not at the expense of the motorist. Mortorists pay gasoline taxes and heavy licensing fees to help maintain the roads.
I don’t know why state Department of Transportation engineer “Sal Panem” approved these changes without holding a public hearing before he made the decision to act.
The acceleration lanes should be restored so vehicles can blend with the traffic flow safely and crosswalks provided for pedestrians and cyclists at all intersections.
The money spent on this project should have gone to other issues include parks and beach lifeguard stands.
The director of Peoples Advocacy for Trails Hawaii should concentrate her effort on safety on the trails, not the roadways, because roads were made for automobiles, not hikers or anything else.

Let hunters hunt
on Mauna Loa
A modest proposal: Give all the local hunters a helicopter ride up and back out from the top of the treeline on Mauna Loa and all the family imus would for sure be smoking this year. It sure beats leaving all that meat to rot up yonder.
The goat or pig with all the veggies would be a holiday feast. You smell that when it’s fresh out of the ground and you are pretty close to paradise.
