Coastal residents order to evacuate
Residents are being advised to move to higher ground Saturday night following a magnitude-7.7 earthquake off the Queen Charlotte Islands area off British Columbia, Canada.
“People should evacuate islandwide if they are in the coastal zone area,” said Duane Hosaka with the Hawaii County Civil Defense. The first wave is anticipated to arrive at 10:28 p.m.
The tsunami warning sirens are going off.
He said the Civil Defense does not yet know how big the waves will be or how many will hit the islands.
The warning, issued at 7:09 p.m. follows a magnitude-7.7 earthquake that occurred at 5:04 p.m. in the Queen Charlotte Islands area off British Columbia, Canada, according to the center. Initially, the center said no tsunami had been generated, however, the warning was issued at 7:09 p.m.
