The Kamehameha Warriors and Pahoa Daggers were awarded with the Sportsmanship Trophy by the Big Island Football Officials Association on Oct. 31. Since 1978 the award is given to the Big Island Interscholastic Federation football team — or teams — demonstrating the best sportsmanship, with emphasis on respect. This year, each co-winner will keep the trophy for six months.

KAILUA-KONA — Kealakehe quarterback Markus Degrate and running back Kobe Antolin combined for five first-half touchdowns and the defense added back-to-back scores in the second quarter as the Waveriders rolled over winless Keaau 65-0 on homecoming night at Waverider Stadium.

KEAAU — Kamehameha’s uptempo offense was so busy scoring touchdowns there was little time to fumble the football, an annoying problem a week ago.

Glance at the numbers and it’s obvious — Saturday’s Big Island Interscholastic Federation matchup between Konawaena and Hilo at Wong Stadium is going to be a battle.

PAHOA — On fourth-and-35, Kohala quarterback Hana Caravalho rolled leisurely to his left, had plenty of time to survey a wide-open field and flicked a ball deep into the waiting arms of Isaiah Villacorte, who picked up a block and scored a touchdown.

KEAAU — Kalei Young is one of those football coaches who sees the bright side in pretty much everything. He won’t tell you it’s a beautiful day if it’s raining, but he’ll find a silver lining somewhere.
