Resort hosting tribute to Kalakaua
“E Mau Ana Ka Hula – A Tribute to King David Kalakaua 2010” will be held Nov. 19 through 21 at the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort.
The last reigning king of the Hawaiian Islands was David Laamea Kamanakapuu Mahinulani Nalaiaehuokalani Lumialani Kalakaua. Known as “the Merrie Monarch,” Kalakaua was credited with the revival of Hawaiian chant, music and the hula, which for decades had been banned.
Hula workshops are scheduled from 1 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 19 in the Kahaluu Ballroom III. From 1 to 3 p.m., kumu Nalani Kanakaole-Zane, of Hilo, will present a class in hula kahiko (ancient style). She will be followed by kumu Puna Dawson, of Kauai, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., who will share her knowledge in hula kahiko. Kumu Meleana Manuel, of Hilo, will complete the evening with instruction in hula auana (modern style) from 6:30 to 8:30. The fee is $20 per class or $50 for three classes. The tribute to Kalakaua from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 20 on the royal luau grounds will feature hula halau from the Big Island, Japan and Eruope performing kahiko and auana. Food and beverages and Hawaiian arts and crafts will be available for sale. The event is free and open to the public.
The Makahiki Festival from 1 to 4 p.m. Nov. 21 on the luau ground is also free and open to the public. The event will include stories about the heiau (ancient temples) located on hotel grounds, games and activities.

IRS drafts new Form W-2 for 2011
The IRS recently issued a draft Form W-2 for 2011, which employers use to report wages and employee tax withholding. The IRS also announced it will defer the new requirement for employers to report the cost of coverage under an employer-sponsored group health plan, making reporting by employers optional in 2011.
The draft Form W-2 includes the codes employers may use to report the cost of coverage under an employer-sponsored group health plan. The Treasury Department and the IRS have determined this relief is necessary to provide employers the time they need to make changes to their payroll systems or procedures in preparation for compliance with the new reporting requirement. The IRS will be publishing guidance on the new requirement later this year.
Although reporting the cost of coverage will be optional with respect to 2011, the IRS stresses the amounts reportable are not taxable.
