Update — flood advisory extended

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flash flood advisory for areas of Ka’u through 1:30 p.m. today.

According to the service, around 10 a.m. radar showed heavy rain in the Ka’u and Puna districts. The area of heavy rain is nearly stationary and falling at a rate of 1 inch an hour.

Residents are cautioned to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas. Do not cross fast-flowing or rising water.

The rainfall may cause hazardous driving conditions, poor visibility and poor breaking, according to the service.
