Kauai police chief on leave
LIHUE, Kauai — Kauai Police Commission Chair Ernest Kanekoa Jr. says police chief Darryl Perry is still on leave pending the investigation into an employee complaint.
Kanekoa made the comment in a joint statement with Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. and the Kauai Police Department.
Carvalho’s office issued the statement on Friday.
Carvalho placed Perry on leave last month, only to have the police commission vote Perry could return to work. When Perry attempted to work, police officers acting under orders from the mayor’s office declined to give Perry his gun, badge and other equipment.
A Kauai County Charter Review Commission on Monday was expected to explore whether Carvalho has the authority to place the chief on leave. But the meeting was canceled due to a lack of quorum.
Hilo attorney reprimanded
Hilo attorney Everett Walton was recently given a public reprimand by the Hawaii Supreme Court’s Disciplinary Board.
The reprimand, according to the board, stems from Walton accessing and using without authorization for 14 months the Westlaw Services account of his former employer, the Republic of Palau’s Office of the Prosecutor, and for refusing to pay for any portion of the services or reimburse Palau.
By doing so, Walton violated Hawaii Rules of Civil Procedure because it is professional misconduct for a lawyer to engage in conduct involving dishonesty, fraud, deceit or misrepresentation, according to the board.
While the reprimand does not prevent Walton from practicing law, it may cause the sanction for any future violations to be more serious, according to the board. Walton was admitted to the Hawaii bar in 1977.
