Gov. Neil Abercrombie released $7.5 million in the school funds, including $280,000 to design a pedestrian buffer for Holualoa Elementary School. Principal Lauren O’Leary said the money will be to create pedestrian access along a county road that runs through the school’s campus.
She said she’s grateful that the money has been awarded for the project.
“There is no place for children to walk except on the road,” O’Leary said, adding that portions of the road will wash out in heavy rain. “I’m hoping for … a pedestrian route, ways kids can walk down from the top of the campus.”
Right now, students must cross the road to access the school’s library and some classrooms.
Design could be completed by March 2013, with construction to follow. O’Leary said the full project is estimated to cost about $600,000. She did not have a time frame in which construction could be completed.
A message left with the state Department of Education’s Office of School Facilities and Support Services was not immediately returned Wednesday.
