Canoe race set for Saturday at Kapaa
Tiger Canoe Heihei Waa canoe race will be held Saturday at Kapaa Beach Park. The race will consist of two courses, long and short. The long course will begin at 9 a.m. at Keokea Beach Park and end at Kapaa Beach Park. The short course will begin and end at Kapaa Beach Park at 9 a.m. Race founder and fiberglass canoe builder March Taylor will feature his three-man canoe, the Kauhola V-3.

Kayak fishing
contest this weekend
P&P Kayaks is holding its kayak fishing Pelagic Pursuit fishing contest Saturday and Sunday. Contestants may enter the Pelagic or in-shore category. Contestants may enter both categories if they wish. Two new Hobie Quest kayaks, cash prizes for second and third place, as well as raffle items will be given out.

Ka‘u seeks football, cross-country coaches
Ka‘u High School has positions open for football and cross-country head coaches for the 2012-2013 season. Applications can be picked up at the school office. Applications will be accepted until March 30.

Beginner golf
classes for women
Golf professional Rob Wohlgemuth will offer a five-week series of beginner golf lessons for women at Makalei Golf Club beginning April 7.
The class meets five consecutive Saturdays from 8 to 10 a.m., and the cost of instruction is $50. The class is open to all women who are interested in the basics of golf. Call Wohlgemuth at 937-0130 to enroll.

Keauhou Canoe Club $1,000 scholarships
The Keauhou Canoe Club will offer two $1,000 scholarships to any West Hawaii graduating senior who was a member of a high school paddling team or club-level paddling organization within the past 18 months.
The first is an academic scholarship awarded to a student with a minimum 2.9 grade-point average. Transcripts are required.
The second scholarship is the Mike Haines Memorial Merit Scholarship awarded to a graduating senior who has contributed to his paddling club or to the community at large through leadership, volunteerism and service. Students may apply for only one scholarship.

Girls hoops clinic and registration this week
A girls basketball registration and clinic will be held this week and March 26 in Kohala.
The clinic, for girls ages 9 to 14, will be from 4 to 5 p.m. today and Wednesday at Hisaoka Gym and again March 26. Free registration includes a uniform. The clinic is sponsored by the Kohala Community Athletic Association. For more information, contact Tom Morse at ltmorse@aol.com or 345-0706.
Big Island Candies tournament sold out
The Big Island Candies Senior Golf Tournament. scheduled for May 11 at the Waikoloa Beach Resort Kings’ Course, has sold out. Registration is now closed for the tournament. Any additional applications that are turned in at the Kamana Senior Center or the West Hawaii Civic Center will be placed on a wait list and addressed if there are any cancellations.
