Kona Historical Society’s Hanohano O Kona Lecture Series presents “A Portal to the Past: Hawaiian Kingdom Property Taxes.”
In late 2004, the KHS along with Dr. Tom Woods began a research project to create a database with information from six years of Hawaiian Kingdom property tax records. The project was initially designed to provide the society with details about the style and extent of ranching in Kona and to determine the ethnic background of individuals involved in the livestock industry in the 19th century.
This presentation will highlight the results of that research. Come and find out how much dogs and cats were taxed in mid-19th century Hawaii. Learn what the leading crops were and who grew them. The tax records tell us who owned the fish nets and the stores in Kona, as well as the leading awa growers. Everyone interested in Kona’s or Hawaii’s history is invited to find out how to unlock this portal to the past.
As with all of the 2012 Hanohano O Kona Lecture Series presentations, this is a free event and will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the West Hawaii Civic Center. For more information, call KHS at 323-3222.
