Spilled mercury found Wednesday at a Hawaii County Department of Water Supply facility in Waimea resulted in no reported injuries, according to the Hawaii Fire Department.
West Hawaii Battalion Chief Ty Medeiros said an employee around 1 p.m. discovered about two ounces of mercury that had spilled from a broken metering device while he was checking on an abandoned building at the water treatment plant located off Lindsey Road.
It was unclear how long the mercury had been there, Medeiros said before noting the building had been abandoned about 20 years ago.
No injuries were reported and no one was exposed to the substance, Medeiros said. The county will hire a contractor to properly clean the site, he added.
Kanani Aton, Department of Water Supply spokeswoman, was unable to be reached for further information as of press time Wednesday.
