On April 6, two kumu hula will inspire visitors with the art of ancient hula with the puili as the featured musical implement. The puili is a piece of cut bamboo approximately 20 inches long, split into strips with a handle, giving the implement a breezy, rustling sound when struck with its pair or on the dancer’s shoulders. The nature of the musical implement was expressed through the character of the chosen hula.
This cultural event is one of 93 slated for Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park’s “Become Inspired by the Authentic” series and provides visitors, local residents and the community a time and place to gather, learn, share and be inspired.
