The public swimming pool at Konawaena High School is putting several swimmers off as they claim the water is too cold.
Some shivering swimmers said they are giving up swimming there until the temperature is warmer. One frustrated Kealakekua swimmer insisted the pool’s solar heating system has been down for more than a month and “everyone is passing the buck on who has to fix it.”
The county Department of Parks and Recreation started receiving complaints about the pool’s temperature roughly two weeks ago, also when the department’s maintenance crew noticed the solar heating system was “acting up.” The manufacturer was immediately contacted, but the warranty had expired, said Bob Fitzgerald, the department’s director.
A pool plumbing contractor was sent to the pool last Thursday to inspect the system. The department is expecting to get a proposal with the estimated costs to repair the system this week or next. Once the department has a better idea of what needs to be done and potential costs, the project will be put out to bid, he said.
Fitzgerald could not provide the exact date as to when the repairs will be completed or when the bidding process will begin, only adding “soon.” He also stressed the pool is still open. Pool hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and closed on weekends, according to the county’s website.
