Mamalahoa Highway reopens following fatal crash

One person is dead and Mamalahoa Highway, north of Kailua-Kona, was closed for several hours following a motorcycle motor vehicle crash Wednesday in South Kohala.

The crash, reported about 11:30 a.m., occurred just south of the highway’s junction with Waikoloa Road, according to police. The accident involved a motorcycle and vehicle. The motorcyclist is dead, according to police.

Mamalahoa Highway, between Kaiminani Drive in Kona and Waimea was closed because of the crash, according to police. Motorists were advised to take Queen Kaahumanu Highway and Kawaihae Road to reach Waimea. Access to the highway from Waikoloa Road was also restricted. The road reopened about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.
