Wharton places third in state recitation competition
Parker junior Aidan Wharton came in third place in the state Poetry Out Loud competition held at St. Andrew’s Cathedral’s Tenney Theatre in Honolulu on March 18. Wharton qualified for the state contest by placing first at Parker.
The annual contest is sponsored by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation and helps students master public speaking while memorizing and reciting great poetic works. For more information, visit parkershool.net.

Compass preparation classes set in Waimea
Free Compass Preparation Classes will be held every Tuesday evening in April from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Kanu O Ka Aina New Century Public Charter School in Waimea. Compass is the placement test used by community colleges in Hawaii and nationally to determine math, reading and writing abilities of entering students. The workshops will include test taking strategies, sample questions and practice designed to help students accurately place at their skill level. A different topic will be covered each week. The free workshops are open to the public and made possible by the University Center, West Hawaii, Hawaii Community College and Kanu O Ka Aina Learning Ohana.
