In keeping with the Hula tradition as inspired by the Annual Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo, April 4 through 13, the Waimea Arts Council offers an exhibit by its talented members, at the Firehouse Gallery. Oils, watercolors and acrylics are featured along with various other media. The display includes fabric lei and offerings of other objects in the tradition of “Na Mea Hawaii.”
The Waimea Arts Council is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the encouragement of local artists and to the enlightenment and education of those interested in the arts. Hours vary but are usually from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Call to inquire at 887-1052. Park behind the senior center at the rear of the gallery.
Wailoa Arts and Cultural Center reopens
After several months of renovations, Wailoa Arts and Cultural Center reopens with the works of 12 Native Hawaiian artists on display. “He Maiau, He Noiau, He Ola! Skilled Men, Skilled Women, Life!” features the graphic art of Craig Neff and Nitta Pilago and work from master canoe builder Uncle Ray Bumatay. An opening reception for the artists will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today.
The center is free and opened to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and from noon to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. For more information, call 933-0416 or email wailoa@yahoo.com.
Life drawing class offered at Donkey Mill
Gerald Lucena presents “Life Drawing: The Undressed,” from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday nights, April 11 through May 16 at Donkey Mill Art Center. This class is open to artists of all genres and students of all ages interested in exploring their personal approach to figure drawing.
Models will provide a series of poses ranging from 2 to 45 minutes. Advice on materials, techniques, approaches to drawing and individual critique will be available.
