Marine biologist Kaipo Perez III provides an updated ecological evaluation of coral reef resources at Kahaluu Bay in a Puana Ka Ike lecture from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday, in the Keauhou Beach Resort ballroom. In the past three years, over 200 sites in or around the bay have been surveyed for a range of physical and biological factors by the Coral Reef Assessment and Monitoring Program and its partners. Perez will discuss the survey project and give a research summary.

Eat steak, support students
The Konawaena High School class of 2015 will hold a steak fry fundraiser Saturday in Kealakekua. Freshmen will sell steak plate lunches, which also include rice, corn, a brownie and a drink, to raise funds for the class of 2015 graduation. Pickup is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the high school’s main parking lot.
CFL exchanges for Parker School
Parker School is participating in the Blue Planet Foundation’s “Conserve Fundraise Learn Bulb Blitz.” Community members are asked to trade incandescent bulbs for CFLs in the school’s Advancement Office. Every light bulb exchanged earns Parker School $.50. The school will send representatives to exchange light bulbs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at KTA Waimea and from 4 to 6 p.m. April 20 at the Waikoloa KTA Village Market. Hilo High class of ‘76 Las Vegas reunion
Hilo High School’s class of 1976 will come together for a reunion August 10 through 15, in Las Vegas. Airfare from Hilo to Las Vegas is available at $606.26 and five nights at the California Hotel will cost $245. Send a $50 deposit check payable to HHS Class of 76 to Kurt Alicuben, 1421 Alu Street, Hilo, HI 96720 by Friday. Full payment is due June 8. Humane society’s Tropical Paws tickets on sale
Tickets for Hawaii Island Humane Society’s 16th annual Tropical Paws benefit are now on sale at HIHS’s Kona and Waimea shelters and online at HIHS.org via PayPal. Tickets cost $100 per person or $1500 for a reserved table of ten. The event, featuring silent and live auctions, a buffet dinner, live entertainment and dancing begins at 6:00 p.m. May 11 at the Four Seasons Hualalai Resort.
