Rumley Art and Frame Gallery is featuring the work of artist Alden Heglund on his first solo art exhibit titled “Visions of Hawaii” from Saturday through Monday at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel. The public is invited to meet the artist during the reception from 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday. Pupu will be served and Don Fisher will provide music.
Alden has been painting landscapes and seascapes since the age of 12. Growing up in the Pacific Northwest provided him plenty of artistic subjects. Fishing, hunting and hiking took him to areas of natural beauty that endowed inspiration for his landscape and seascape works.
Throughout his school years, he studied art, art history, painting and crafting including leatherwork, jewelry and pottery. However, what he loves most is painting. He started with oil as his medium and then he shifted to acrylics. His works have been displayed in the Bank of America building in Portland, Seges Art Bar, in various juried art festivals and art walks, including the West Linn Art Festival, Wilsonville “Art on the Town” and the Pearl district’s “First Thrusday Art Work.” He has paintings hanging in private residences from East Coast to West Coast, Canada, Japan and England.
After his first visit to Maui more than 15 years ago, his subject matter changed. The beauty of the paradise island has captivated his visions of Hawaii. “The vibrant colors, the landscapes and the relationship with the ocean were irresistible,” said Heglund. In 1999, he picked up an airbrush and started using it to create backgrounds and special effects on his work. “I feel that with use of airbrush, I can create effects that give my paintings a unique and vibrant feel to them.” Also, as an amateur astronomer, his paintings frequently depict his love of the celestial wonders.
Living in Hawaii has provided him endless inspiration for his work, he said. He has donated pieces to different nongovernment organizations on the Big Island for their silent auctions. Heglund is also one of the featured artists of Rumley Art aanndd Frame Gallery.
Original works, giclee prints and fine art paper prints will be available during the show.
