Incoming sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade Waimea students have the opportunity to participate in a 12-day “Jump Start” program this summer. Students will learn essential middle school skills, including organizational techniques and life skills, basic computer programs and Ike Hawaii cultural lessons along with reading, writing, math and enrichment.
The program costs $50 per student, including busing morning and afternoon, breakfast and lunch daily in the school cafeteria, and classes. Students are required to wear uniform T-shirts that are not included in the fee. Tuition is waived for children eligible for free and reduced lunch. Alu Like scholarships are also available. Classes run from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. weekdays June 18 through July 6. Classes will not be held June 22, 29 and July 4.
Waimea Middle School incoming students have priority placement, but students attending other schools will be accepted if space is available.
Applications have been sent home to all current Waimea Elementary School fifth-grade families and all current WMS sixth- and seventh-grade families. Applications also are available in the school office and are posted online at WaimeaMiddleSchool.org. Deadline to register is May 16.
WMS will host its annual orientation for incoming sixth-graders and their families from 5 to 7 p.m. May 2 in the school cafeteria. This is a must for all incoming families as it includes a briefing on what it means to transition into middle school and what unique programs WMS has to offer.
