Ancient hula program set at national park
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, two kumu hula will inspire visitors with the art of ancient hula at Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park. The ili ili, two flat pebbles held in each hand and struck together like castanets, are the featured musical implements.
This cultural event provides visitors, local residents and the community a time and place to gather, learn, share and become inspired.
Entrance fees are $5 per vehicle or $3 per person for walk-ins.
Aquaponics tour
slated for Saturday
Aquaponics is an innovative growing system that borrows from ancient Hawaiian agriculture practices and introduces fish into the garden as a source of fertilizer to grow healthy, delicious foods. This water- and soil-saving technology adds new foods to the local food system.
Tours of aquaponics farms in Honokaa and Waimea are scheduled between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday. Carpooling is encouraged and can be arranged when participants make reservations. For reservations, email hawaii@one-island.org. A $10 donation for the tour will go toward summer youth scholarships.
Petroglyph telescopes on Mauna Kea Coin
The 2012 Mauna Kea Coin design was awarded to Waiakea Intermediate School seventh-grader Serena Usuda. Usuda’s design connects Hawaiian culture and nature with modern telescopes in her petroglyph-style artwork.
Free aluminum coins are available to attendees of the AstroDay event held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Prince Kuhio Plaza in Hilo. Visitors who fill a “passport” and turn it in to the Mauna Kea Coin Contest booth will receive a coin. The coins are also available at the Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station and at its e-store.

Kennel club holding dog rally trials
The Kona Coast Kennel Club will host two American Kennel Club-licensed obedience and rally trials from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Harold H. Higashihara Park in Honalo. Entries will be a combination of mixed and purebred dogs.
These events are free to spectators and offer the public an opportunity to see various breeds competing in two types of events. Dogs not entered in the event are not permitted at the park.

Golf tourney benefits school foundation
The seventh annual Konawaena Foundation Golf Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, with registration at 6:30 a.m. and a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. at Kona Country Club in Keauhou.
Big Island Honda will give away a new Honda for the first hole-in-one on the designated par 3 hole, as well as provide prizes on each of the three other par 3s, including free resort accommodations, rounds of golf, oceanfront brunches and more. The format is two-person scramble, with each person hitting at least six tee shots. Two “Mulligans” per person are available for $5 each. Proceeds benefit the Konawaena Foundation, a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization in support of higher education programs at Konawaena High School.

Derby fundraiser planned for Saturday
A Kentucky Derby-themed fundraiser is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Queen Emma Community Center, located mauka of Christ Church Episcopal on Konawaena Road in Kealakekua. The event is a benefit to support the Queen Emma Community Center outreach programs
There will be live streaming of the Kentucky Derby race, traditional derby food and drink, including burgoo and derby pie. The price is $35 and tickets are available on brownpapertickets.com or by calling 640-5700.
