The Big Island Drug Court will graduate its participants, as well as celebrate National Drug Court Month, this week at locations in West and East Hawaii.
On Monday, a graduation ceremony for Big Island Drug Court West Hawaii participants will be held at 9 a.m. at the Kona Drug Court located on Halekii Street in Kealakekua. The 40th graduation ceremony will also touch on the program’s success since being implemented in West Hawaii.
All members of the Big Island Drug Court Team — the judge, prosecutor, public defender/attorney, police and treatment providers, as well as the graduates’ families, will be in attendance, according to Warren Kitaoka, drug court administrator.
On Thursday, Big Island Drug Court East Hawaii participants will take part in the court’s 41st graduation ceremony at the court’s facility within the Hale Kaulike Building in Hilo. The ceremony commences at 1 p.m., according to Kitaoka.
National Drug Court Month is observed annually during May to highlight the impacts of the 2,600-plus drug and other treatment courts across the United States, according to the National Association of Drug Court Professionals.
Elections office closed Monday, Tuesday
The Hawaii County Elections satellite office located at West Hawaii Civic Center will be closed Monday and Tuesday. It will reopen Wednesday. Nomination papers for candidate issuing and filing will only be available at the Hilo Elections office during the closure.
