KonaBaseball.com registration Sunday
The KonaBaseball.com League will conduct its annual draft and tryouts at 10 a.m. Sunday at Old Kona Airport Park’s Simmons Field.
All returning and new players are asked to bring gloves, bats, closed-toe shoes, long pants and a $20 registration fee to the tryouts. Players ages 18 to 88 — and others given special invitations — are encouraged to attend.
The season begins in May and runs through September, with games taking place on Sundays at Simmons Field.

Kona Junior Golf program begins Wednesday
The Kona Junior Golf summer program at Kona Country Club will begin Wednesday. Registration will be at 2:30 p.m., and the first session begins at 3:30 p.m. The program is open to golfers ages 8 to 17.
The cost for the program is $50, and all golfers must have their own clubs and proper golf attire. For more information, contact Claude Onizuka at 896-9487.
Mauna Kea
skins game Friday
Mauna Kea Golf Course will host a skins game Friday. The tournament will begin with tee times from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The green fee is $95, and there is a $35 cash buy-in as well.
The format will be scratch competition (no handicaps), and birdies and lower will count as “skins.”
Professional men golfers will play from the championship black tees, amateur men will play from the blue tees, and all women will play from the white tees.

Actor Max Gail
on Emily T. Gail Show
Max Gail and Leo Sears are guests for this week’s Emily T. Gail Show, which is available at espnhawaii.com under “lineup” and as an iTunes podcast.
Max Gail will discuss “42,” a movie that focuses on Jackie Robinson breaking the Major League Baseball color barrier. He plays the part of former Los Angeles Dodgers manager Burt Shotten.
Sears, the founder and director of the Big Island Film Festival, will give an overview of this year’s festival, which begins Thursday and runs through Memorial Day at Fairmont Orchid Hawaii and the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows.
Also, Bike Works Beach & Sports’ Jeff Manzo and Andrea Bess will discuss Bike Works’ involvement with Ironman 70.3 Hawaii, which takes place June 2 on the Big Island.

Kukio Challenge
June 3 at Kukio Bay
The 11th annual Kukio Challenge will take place at 9 a.m. June 3.
The race features a half-mile swim, three-mile run, and either a four-mile OC-1 paddle course or a two-mile paddleboard/stand-up paddleboard course.
Athletes age 14 and older may register for the event, which is limited to 100 entrants.
The cost is $65, and athletes must register online at kukio.net by 3 p.m. June 1. Participants may register on race day for $75.
Proceeds benefit the Hui Laulima O Kekaha Kai, a group that aims to ensure protection of the natural, cultural and scenic resources of Kekaha Kai State Park in North Kona.

Beginner golf
classes for women
Golf professional Rob Wohlgemuth will offer a five-week series of beginner golf lessons for women at Makalei Golf Club beginning June 9.
The classes are open to all women interested in the basics of golf.
Classes meet five consecutive Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Speed clinic at Konawaena June 12, 13
Joshua Abner, the track and field and cross-country coach at Honokaa High, and Rick Hagedorn of Speedburners will host the Big Island Speed Clinic at Konawaena High June 12 and 13.
The clinic is designed to help Big Island athletes “create speed in the athletic world,” Abner said.
The clinic is open to athletes interested in becoming faster through proper speed training.
The cost of the clinic is $100 for both days.

King’s Swim
July 7 at Kailua Bay
Kona Aquatics will host its 18th annual King’s Swim at 8 a.m. July 9 at Kailua Bay.
The 1.2-mile course begins at Kailua Bay and ends at Kamakahonu Bay, directly in front of King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.
Event organizers will not allow fins or wetsuits. Applications are available at Bike Works (74-5583 Luhia St.) in Kailua-Kona. A nonrefundable entry fee of $15 must accompany the application.
The registration deadline is June 30.
Late registration takes place from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. at Kailua Pier on race day. The late registration fee is $20.
Awards go to the top three male and female finishers and to winners in each of the event’s 14 age groups. Volunteers with kayaks or surfboards wishing to join the safety patrol for the swim are welcome to participate.

HI-PAL hoops tourneys this summer
The Hawaii Police Department’s traffic services section and the Hawaii Island Police Activities League will conduct Click It or Ticket 3-on-3 Basketball Tournaments on the following dates:

c July 29-July 1: Kekuaokalani Gymnasium
c July 14: Kamehameha Park gymnasium in Kohala
c July 20-22: Papaaloa Gymnasium in Laupahoehoe

The tournaments offer five boys age divisions (5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14), a high school boys division, three girls age divisions (10-and-under, 12-and-under, 14-and-under) and a high school girls division. The tournament’s age cutoff date is Dec. 31, 2011.
Each division has a limit of 10 teams. Teams interested in participating must complete registration materials two weeks prior to the start of a tournament. Submit registration packets at the community policing office (formerly the receiving desk in the public safety building) in Hilo or the Kona police receiving desk. Interested teams may also fax materials to 961-2209 in East Hawaii or 327-3583 in West Hawaii.
