The Waikoloa Dry Forest Initiative is hosting a 1950s dance party from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Waikoloa School complex. “Elvis” will make an appearance at the party emceed by DJ Wiliwili.
The event includes dance contests, prizes, food and ice cream floats. Tickets are available at the door for $20 per family; adult admission is $10; $5 for keiki.
The Waikoloa Dry Forest Initiative is a nonprofit organization that protects and manages a remnant lowland wiliwili forest near Waikoloa Village. For more information, visit waikoloadryforest.org.
Breast cancer support group meets Tuesday
The breast cancer support group that meets at Teshima’s Restaurant will get together at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
People newly diagnosed and breast cancer survivors are welcome, as well as interested caregivers and supportive family members.

Emergency response training begins June 2
The Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency and Hawaii Fire Department have scheduled an in-depth, 24-hour Community Emergency Response Team training course starting June 2 at the University of the Nations in Kailua-Kona.
The course is offered free of charge to individual residents, businesses and community groups.
Contact Bill Hanson at Civil Defense at 935-0031 to learn how to register for the four-Saturday course funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Department of Homeland Security. Call early to reserve a seat.

Senior yoga, aerobics classes offered
Hawaii County’s Department of Parks and Recreation Elderly Recreation Services will hold beginner yoga classes for anyone aged 55 and older from 9 to 10 a.m. June 4, 11 and 18 at Hale Halawai. Beginner yoga classes are also planned from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. June 5, 12 and 19 at Yano Hall.
Each series of classes costs $10.
Also, senior aerobics classes are scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Tuesdays in June at Hale Halawai.

Video production class scheduled for June 6
Na Leo O Hawaii Inc. offers a free video production orientation from 6 to 8 p.m. June 6 at its facility in Kaiwi Square, 74-5565 Luhia St., No. C1-A, in Kailua-Kona.
The nonprofit corporation manages cable public access channels and promotes the creation of programs by and for the people of Hawaii Island.

Volcano Art Center begins photo tours
The Volcano Art Center will offer two monthly photo tours guided by professional nature photographer Robert Frutos beginning June 12.
Tours begin at Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village and journey into Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Participants will learn tips and tricks for capturing the beauty of Volcano through a camera lens.
Two-hour tours are planned from 5 to 7 p.m. the second Tuesday of every month beginning June 12. The cost is $65; $50 for center members and kamaaina. Four-hour tours are planned from 3 to 7 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of every month beginning June 26. The cost is $125; $95 for center members and kamaaina. Park admission is included in the price of the tours.

‘Summer Unplugged’ kicks off June 16
Volcano Art Center presents a contemporary acoustic concert series, “Summer Unplugged,” at its Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village.
Slack key artist Jeff Peterson performs at 7 p.m. June 16. Hapa’s Barry Flanagan will play July 7; John Cruz performs Aug. 25; and Peter Moon Jr. is in concert Sept. 22.
Only 100 tickets are available for each show. Tickets are available online at volcanoartcenter.org or at the center’s Niaulani Campus for $25; $22.50 for center members.

Hawaii Volcanoes offers plethora of programs in June
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park continues its tradition of sharing Hawaiian culture and After Dark in the Park programs with the community and visitors throughout June. These programs are free, but park entrance fees may apply.
Puakea Nogelmeier will describe the project, “Ike Kuokoa: Liberating Knowledge,” and how the public can get involved. This project is an effort to make a large cache of Hawaiian-language newspapers printed from 1834 to 1948 available to the public. This presentation is planned for 7 p.m. June 5 in the Kilauea Visitor Center auditorium.
Twelve-time Na Hoku Hanohano award-winning singer, songwriter and producer Kenneth Makuakane will share songs from his latest albums from 10 a.m. to noon June 20 on the Kilauea Visitor Center lanai.
Falsetto Kai Hoopii will share the music of his ohana from 6:30 to 8 p.m. June 20 in the Kilauea Visitor Center auditorium.
Hawaii Wildlife Management Organization Executive Director Elizabeth Pickett will give a presentation on what residents and communities can do to prepare their families and protect their homes from future wildfire events at 7 p.m. June 26 in the Kilauea Visitor Center auditorium.
Park rangers Keoki Wells and Jaeneise Cuison will demonstrate the art of making a feather kahili, a symbol of Hawaiian royalty. Attendees may watch and learn or join in and make their own kahili to take home. The presentation lasts from 10 a.m. to noon June 27 on the Kilauea Visitor Center lanai.
