Wade’s knee may keep him out of London Games
MIAMI — Dwyane Wade played with knee pain throughout the playoffs. He’ll soon know exactly what was causing that problem, and if it could keep him out of the London Olympics.
One day after celebrating his second NBA championship, the Miami Heat guard told The Associated Press on Friday that he will soon have his ailing left knee examined, and acknowledges that surgery may be a possibility. Wade appeared in all 23 postseason games for Miami, averaging 22.8 points, and scored 20 in the title-clinching win for the Heat against Oklahoma City on Thursday night.
An MRI exam will likely take place in the next few days. Wade had the knee drained during Miami’s second-round series against Indiana.
Wade had surgery on his left knee in May 2007. He led the Americans in scoring at the Beijing Olympics, averaging 16 points despite coming off the bench in all eight games.
Penguins deal
C Jordan Staal
to Hurricanes
PITTSBURGH — Jordan Staal wanted a family reunion, and the Pittsburgh Penguins obliged.
The Penguins traded the talented center to the Carolina Hurricanes for two players and Carolina’s first-round pick in the NHL draft on Friday night.
The 23-year-old Staal helped the Penguins win the Stanley Cup in 2009 and was ready to enter the final year of his contract but balked at signing a lengthy extension. Rather than continue negotiating, the Penguins shipped him to the Hurricanes, where Staal will join his brother, Eric. Carolina also has Jared Staal — currently playing in the American Hockey League.
LA Kings to re-sign Stoll, Fraser
LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Kings reached agreements in principle Friday to re-sign centers Jarret Stoll and Colin Fraser, two big contributors to their Stanley Cup title run.
Stoll’s three-year deal is expected to be worth $9.75 million, while Fraser will get a two-year deal worth $1.65 million.
The Kings have the entire core of their first championship team under contract except power forward Dustin Penner.
Stoll, who turns 30 on Sunday, is the Kings’ third-line center and faceoff specialist. He also plays extensively on the Kings’ penalty kill while providing veteran leadership.
Yakupov taken by Oilers with top pick in NHL draft
PITTSBURGH — Nail Yakupov is ready to live with the spotlight that comes with being a No. 1 pick.
On the night he was chosen first in the NHL draft, he had to share it when the host Pittsburgh Penguins traded popular forward Jordan Staal to the Carolina Hurricanes.
An hour after the Edmonton Oilers started the draft on Friday night by selecting the dynamic 18-year-old Russian forward with the top overall selection, the Penguins shook up the somewhat ho-hum proceedings by sending Staal to a reunion with his brother Eric in Carolina.
