Quilt Lei Hayama of Japan will display its Hawaiian-style quilts from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and Saturday at the Firehouse Gallery in Waimea.
This marks the 11th time members of this unique club have shown their work at the gallery. Club president, quilt designer and teacher Shigemi Obata is the featured artist at the exhibit which includes quilts designed by herself and her students.
Obata learned the quilting style from Doris Iwalani Feary Nosaka of Hilo. Nosaka introduced her to the Waimea Quilt Club almost 25 years ago.
Obata travels to Hawaii about four times a year photographing flowers that she then translates to design her original quilt patterns.
The Firehouse Gallery is the large red building located opposite the Waimea Chevron station at the main intersection of Mamalahoa Highway and Lindsey Road.
