Big Island police are investigating a reported Tuesday evening shooting within the Mountain View area of Puna.
Shortly after 5:30 pm, a 39-year-old Mountain View woman reported to police that two hours earlier, she had went to a man’s home on Overview Road top retrieve her property and had gotten into a verbal confrontation with him, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
When she attempted to leave, she reported police hearing what sounded like a gunshot. When she turned toward the man, according to police, he allegedly pointed what appeared to be a firearm at her and discharged another round.
The woman fled the area and reported the incident to police. She was not injured. Police have classified the incident as a second-degree attempted murder.
Detectives are looking to question James Gannon Coffey, 47, of Overview Road, in connection with the incident. He is also wanted on an outstanding arrest warrant.
Coffey is described as Caucasian, 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing about 150 pounds, with hazel eyes and short graying hair, according to police. He may be operating a brown late model Toyota pickup truck.
Police advise that Coffey may be armed and is considered dangerous. The public is asked not to contact Coffey, but to instead call police.
Anyone with information on the case or the whereabouts of Coffey should call Detective Joel Field at 961-2381 or email him at jfield@co.hawaii.hi.us. Information can also be directed to the department’s nonemergency line at 935-3311.
