Cup; Pervak collapses
BAKU, Azerbaijan — Julia Cohen of the United States upset top-seeded Ksenia Pervak, who was carried off on a stretcher Tuesday after collapsing from heat exhaustion in the first round of the Baku Cup.
She withdrew with the score 6-4, 3-6, 3-2.
Second-seeded Alexandra Panova of Russia edged Sacha Jones of Australia 7-5, 7-6 (7) in the WTA outdoor hard-court event at the Baku Tennis Academy. Fifth-seeded Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia defeated Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.
Gulbis beats
Haider-Maurer at Kitzbuehel
KITZBUEHEL, Austria — Ernests Gulbis of Latvia saved a match point before beating Andreas Haider-Maurer of Austria 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 Tuesday in the first round of the Bet-at-Home Cup.
The seventh-seeded Gulbis was down 5-2 in the second set before winning 11 of the next 12 games.
He hit an ace to hold off the Austrian’s match point at 5-4.
Jan Hajek of the Czech Republic pulled out because of dizziness while trailing Rogerio Dutra Silva of Brazil 4-1 in the opening set.
Philipp Oswald of Austria won his first match on the ATP tour after rallying to beat Daniel Brands of Germany 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Russell, Malisse advance
at Farmers Classic
LOS ANGELES — Michael Russell moved into the second round of the tournament with a 6-3, 6-4 win over fellow American Jesse Levine on Tuesday at the Farmers Classic.
Nicolas Meister fell to No. 5 seed Xavier Malisse of Belgium 6-4, 6-1. And Bradley Klahn, also a qualifier, lost to Paolo Lorenzi of Italy 6-4, 3-6, 6-0.
