Mai Tai Festival
kicks off Saturday
The fourth annual Don the Beachcomber Mai Tai Festival on Saturday at the Royal Kona Resort promises a day of fun activities and bartender competitions, but it will also raise funds for the Big Island’s food bank.
In partnership with Hawaiian Hotels and Resorts, rocker Sammy Hagar will donate $5,000 via the Hagar Family Foundation to the The Food Basket, Hawaii Island Food Bank’s Hunger Doesn’t Take A Holiday campaign currently under way on the Big Island. Hagar’s newly released Sammy’s Beach Bar Rum is a title sponsor of the festival.
Adults attending the festival will be entered to win a two-night stay at the resort and luau for two at the property. Additional chances to win the stay and luau at the resort can be obtained with each donation of $5 to the Food Bank. Donation canisters will be available throughout the festival grounds.
The day’s events include a barbecue battle, farmers and crafters marketplace, pool party with Henry Kapono providing live entertainment, and the signature $10,000 Mai Tai Mix-Off.
Food booths and beverage service will be available using event scrip that can be purchased at stations throughout the resort’s grounds.

Halau seeking
new students
Halau Kalaakeakaui-kawekiu is accepting new students during its open registration from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday and again Aug. 25 at 74-5598 Luhia St., Suite 101, in Kailua-Kona.
The organization was founded to heighten indigenous Hawaiian cultural awareness and participation through its educational programs and annual performances. It focuses on maintaining and perpetuating the beliefs, teachings, philosophies, practices and traditions of culture through hula.

Korean War vets
meet Saturday
The Korean War Veterans Association of West Hawaii Chapter 279 will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at Denny’s Restaurant on Henry Street in Kailua-Kona.
Membership is open to any person who has seen honorable service in any of the U.S. armed forces, if said service was within Korea including territorial waters and airspace at any time from Sept. 3, 1945, to the present, or said service was outside of Korea between June 25, 1950, and Jan. 31, 1955. Associate members are also welcome.

League of Women Voters meets Saturday
The Hawaii County League of Women Voters meets Saturday at Tex Drive-in in Honokaa.
Matt Hamabata, executive director of the Kohala Center, will speak at 10:30 a.m., following a 10 a.m. business meeting.
Hamabata will discuss his organization’s work as a center of community-based research, conservation and education and the effects of its programs on food and energy sustainability, ecosystem health and educational opportunities for youth in Hawaii.
A no-host lunch and board meeting follow Hamabata’s presentation.

Samba dance class scheduled for Saturday
Lance Oliver will lead a samba dance workshop from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Fit Zone inside The Club in Kailua-Kona.
Sponsored by the Kona Ballroom Dance Club, the event includes open dancing after the lesson, from 3 to 4 p.m. Dancers are asked to wear leather-soled shoes.
The workshop costs $15; $10 for KBDC members. No partner is required to attend.

group meets Sunday
The Kona Amateur Radio Society will hold a meeting and potluck meal from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the south end of Wawaloli Beach Park at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority.
All members, friends and those interested in amateur radio are invited. Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite Indian dish to share.
